In a statement, the Attorney General’s Office (FGR) reported that it has opened two investigations into crimes related to the operation to dismantle the drug lab in the El Pinal mountains in the municipality of Morelos, Chihuahua state. Following this operation, a vehicle overturned, killing the director and an agent of the Chihuahua State Investigation Agency (AEI), as well as two U.S. agents.

Mayor Claudia Sheinbaum has repeatedly pointed out in the past week possible violations of provisions of the Mexican Constitution and the National Security Law, due to Chihuahua authorities allowing the presence of foreign agents without permission or notification from Mexican federal authorities.

“The second investigation was initiated based on a criminal complaint, following a press conference held by the state prosecutor on April 19, as well as information shared at the Chihuahua State Security Council meeting.”

“The investigation into the presence of foreign nationals, given their characteristics and relevance, as well as the possibility that crimes against national security may have been committed, was determined to continue under the Special Prosecutor’s Office for Investigation and Litigation of Complex Cases within the same FECOR (Specialized Prosecutor’s Office for Regional Control).”

It is the Specialized Prosecutor’s Office for Regional Control (FECTOR) in Chihuahua that is investigating possible federal crimes.

The first case is the discovery of the synthetic drug lab in the mountains between the municipalities of Morelos and Guachochi.

The Chihuahua State Attorney General’s Office (FGE) stated that it had been investigating the lab for “months” but was unaware of it to the Federal Attorney General’s Office (FGR).

The FGR emphasizes that “until yesterday, at the repeated request of the Federal Attorney General’s Office, the Chihuahua State Attorney General’s Office submitted a copy of the case file initiated at the state level, and therefore the actions taken by that ministerial authority are currently under review for inclusion in the aforementioned federal case files.”

Finally, the FGR states that: “The progress and results of the investigations will be communicated in a transparent and timely manner, observing the implications of due process.”
