Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum stated that her government had no prior knowledge of the participation of U.S. Embassy personnel in a security operation in Chihuahua, where a traffic accident left two U.S. officials and two Mexican state agents dead.
The president was reacting to the accident that occurred on Sunday on the Chihuahua-Ciudad Juárez highway, as officials were returning from an operation in the municipality of Morelos, where they dismantled a drug trafficking laboratory, according to the state Attorney General’s Office.
Sheinbaum Pardo expressed her condolences for the victims: two U.S. Embassy officials and two members of the Chihuahua State Investigation Agency (AEI), including its director, Pedro Ramón Oseguera Cervantes.
The president emphasized that her administration had not received any information regarding collaboration between state authorities and U.S. personnel in security operations, and announced that her government had requested information from both the state government and Washington to clarify what happened.
He insisted that, although bilateral cooperation exists on security matters, it must be carried out within institutional channels and with full respect for Mexican sovereignty.
