Las Lajas in the municipality of Buenaventura and Abraham González in the municipality of Guerrero are the two that are spilling water following the rainfall recorded in the state. In Chihuahua, the 10 dams report a storage capacity of 35.66%.

The local director of the National Water Commission, Román Alcántara Alvídrez, reported that the reservoirs have received runoff from the rains. One of the dams with good volume recovery is Francisco I. Madero, better known as Las Vírgenes, which currently records 50.08%, compared to 11.33% in 2024 and 11.55% in January.

The Las Lajas dam, located in the municipality of Buenaventura, reports a storage capacity of 84.165 billion cubic meters (Mm3), or 101.080 percent, which has caused it to begin spilling.

The State Civil Protection Coordination alerted the public due to the rising water level of the El Carmen River in Buenaventura, where rainfall caused the Las Lajas Dam to exceed its maximum level.

The dam’s spill caused the river’s flow to rise, putting the communities of Colonia Primero de Mayo, Lerdo de Tejada, Flores Magón, and Benito Juárez at risk.

The CEPC is holding technical meetings and maintaining constant communication with municipal authorities, emergency services, and community representatives to coordinate preventive actions and maintain ongoing monitoring of hydrometeorological conditions.

The Abraham González Dam, located in the municipality of Guerrero and fed by the Papigochi River, reports a storage capacity of 82,388 Mm3, equivalent to 103.823%.

The state’s largest reservoir is La Boquilla in San Francisco de Conchos, with a reported capacity of 767,133 Mm3 out of a total of 2,846.78 Mm3, or just 26.947% of its volume. Rainfall in the mountainous area and the upper basin is expected to generate runoff for this reservoir, which supplies water to a large part of the San Francisco and Camargo regions and flows into El Granero.

The recovery of the dams has been good, and further increases in September, which in Chihuahua are considered one of the rainiest months, are expected.

The Luis Laureano León Dam in the municipality of Aldama is reporting a 56.790% capacity; El Tintero in Namiquipa is 59.212%; The dams supplied by the Florido River are San Gabriel and Pico del Águila, the former registering 27% and the latter 73.63%.

Heavy rains are expected in the next few hours in Namiquipa, Buenaventura, Riva Palacio, Chihuahua, Meoqui, Rosales, Ocampo, Temósachic, Cuauhtémoc, Guerrero, Guadalupe y Calvo, Allende, Parral, San Francisco de Conchos, El Tule, Huejotitán, Guachochi, Batopilas, and Morelos.
