People with disabilities in Chihuahua have begun participating in a series of public consultations promoted by the state Congress. The initiative seeks to gather opinions and experiences to strengthen laws and public policies focused on their rights.

During the launch of the consultations, Representative Herminia Gómez Carrasco stated that the purpose is “to listen directly to people with disabilities, as well as their families and caregivers,” in order to develop more inclusive legislation.

The chair of the Human Rights and Attention to Vulnerable Groups Commission emphasized that the consultations incorporate accessibility mechanisms. She explained that materials will be available in “easy-to-read format, Mexican Sign Language, and Braille” to ensure broad participation.

The sessions will be held from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. in Chihuahua, Camargo, Cuauhtémoc, Parral, and Ciudad Juárez. The Chihuahua State Congress indicated that the intention is for citizens to contribute proposals that strengthen the protection of rights.

The working groups will address four main areas: “Inclusion; Education and Health; Accessibility; and Access to Justice.” Each topic will provide insight into the challenges faced daily by people with disabilities in different regions.

According to the call for participation, the opinions gathered will enrich the analysis of “more than 40 legislative initiatives related to their rights,” currently under review by the state legislature.

Representative Herminia Gómez emphasized that the ultimate goal is to ensure that “their voice is part of the development of new laws and reforms,” incorporating the real needs of people with disabilities in Chihuahua.
