Nearly 250,000 people, or between 6 and 7 percent more than last year, stayed in Chihuahua during the first week of the holiday season, known as Holy Week, according to the Ministry of Tourism.
Edibray Gómez Gallegos, head of the agency, indicated that this represents between 75 and 80 percent hotel occupancy throughout the state, as well as an estimated economic impact of nearly 500 million pesos.
According to data compiled by the Ministry, this number of “night tourists”—that is, vacationers who stayed overnight in accommodations such as hotels or cabins—was recorded from April 12 to 20.
The official explained that this was also reflected in the presence of more than 460,000 “excursionists,” a classification for those visitors who did not stay at a hotel, at destinations such as Las Perlas del Conchos, Aldama, Barrancas Park, or at religious celebrations typical of this time of year, such as the Stations of the Cross.
Gómez Gallegos added that, since these figures correspond only to the first eight days of the holiday period, tourism indicators are expected to increase, as a high percentage of the population continued their vacation for another week.
