CHIHUAHUA, Mexico — Local authorities are investigating an armed robbery along the Cuauhtémoc-Chihuahua highway after a 31-year-old motorist was forced off the road and robbed of cash and electronics on Wednesday, September 9.
The incident occurred around 3:00 a.m. on September 9, roughly five kilometers past the toll booth heading toward the city of Chihuahua. According to the victim’s account, a recent-model white vehicle forced his car to stop. Two assailants armed with handguns and long rifles exited the vehicle and forced him out of his automobile.
The assailants robbed the driver of approximately 39,000 Mexican pesos in cash, a gray iPad, and a gray Samsung Galaxy smartphone. During the encounter, the victim engaged in a physical struggle with one of the attackers before managing to scramble back into his vehicle and drive off.
The suspects pursued the driver toward the toll plaza, but he eventually managed to evade them. Municipal police responded to a emergency call at kilometer 97 of the highway around 6:00 a.m., where the victim recounted the details of the attack to officers.
Elements of the National Guard arrived shortly after to take control of the scene and initiate official investigative proceedings.
The violent highway robbery has raised growing safety concerns among local commuters, as it marks the third armed robbery reported along the Cuauhtémoc-Chihuahua corridor in recent weeks. Local authorities have stepped up patrols in response to the recent surge in highway incidents.
