Silvia Rocío Delgado García, Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán’s former lawyer, received her certificate as a criminal judge in Chihuahua.

Proposed by the Governor of Chihuahua, Maru Campos, a member of the National Action Party (PAN), the lawyer competed in the state’s 5th Judicial District.

The State Electoral Institute awarded Delgado her certificate on Friday despite complaints from the Defensorxs organization that she was ineligible.

Questioned by local media about her relationship with the former leader of the Sinaloa Cartel, the lawyer responded that she has done her job.

Delgado requested that her work as the drug trafficker’s defense attorney no longer be referred to as a “connection” with him and that the term “representation” be used instead.

“All we do is a job. What I want, the decision to enter this electoral process was very simple: I want to consolidate my career by helping the community.”

“Here I’ve helped a few, helping the defense,” she said, according to local media.

The organization Defensorxs reported that Delgado García joined “El Chapo’s” defense team in August 2016.

It reported that the elected candidate filed an injunction in December of that year, requesting an additional blanket for her client, arguing that the low temperatures at the Federal Social Readaptation Center (Cefereso) Number 9 in Ciudad Juárez were affecting his well-being.

In January 2017, she also reported that a prison guard was harassing Guzmán Loera.

The elected judge worked with attorneys José Refugio Rodríguez Núñez and Andrés Granados Flores, who were “El Chapo’s” main defense attorneys in Mexico before the court. the proceedings against him, including his extradition proceedings.
